Fortinet today partied a victorious first quarter of 2021 with two new appliances directed at developing 5G use cases forward with a managed SD-WAN offering through BT. The huge plus of 5G over 4G is business applications, Fortinet CMO John Maddison said, in an interview with SDxCentral.

The front of these appliances points to address 5G packet core security. The FortiGate 7121F is, as Maddison explains, a monster of a firewall, and among Fortinet’s most strong to date.

The 7121F will enable 5G, mobile network operators, to ensure multiple edges within the infrastructure and allow [managed service providers] to develop up scalable security offerings, Fortinet CEO Ken Xie said on Thursday’s profits call.

The system is organized around the vendor’s custom security processing unit ASIC, which can manage firewall throughputs up to 1.9 Tb/s, threat blocking and SSL inspection of more than 500 Gb/s, and as many as one billion sessions at any given time.

According to Maddison, the high throughputs and extended perimeter of the 5G infrastructure prompted the development of the new firewall.

Besides a force into the 5G space, Fortinet originated a controlled secure SD-WAN offering from BT, formerly British Telecom, developing a decade-long partnership with the telecommunications service provider.

First declared in August last year, the new present is based on Fortinet’s FortiGate firewalls, which connect SD-WAN functionality with a next-generation firewall appliance. Practicing the service, customers can approach both branch connectivity and the extended security perimeter emerging from extended reliance on cloud and software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications, the company declared.

Fortinet is unique in that it is one of some firewall vendors designing and developing its own ASICs to expedite security and SD-WAN workloads.

Xie also promoted stable growth in the company’s secure SD-WAN platform, which considered for 14% of total billings throughout the quarter, with 15 of those contracts worth more than $1 million.

Seeing to the second quarter of 2021, Fortinet is forecasting revenues in the limit of $733 million to $747 million. The organization now anticipates posting full-year revenues of $3.08 billion to $3.13 billion.
